What the technical terms mean

Use these definitions when reading a product data sheet. Compare results for the same test method and intended use.

Viscosity

Resistance to flow at a stated temperature; selection starts with the application requirement, not preference.

Viscosity index

A higher value generally means viscosity changes less across temperature, but it is only one selection factor.

Pour point

A low-temperature flow indicator; it does not replace the required winter viscosity grade or lookup result.

Flash and fire point

Ignition-related test temperatures: flash point marks a momentary ignition of vapor; fire point marks sustained burning under the test conditions. Neither is an operating-temperature limit.

NOACK volatility

Measures the percentage of oil lost to evaporation under specified high-temperature test conditions; it is different from flash or fire point.

TBN

Reserve alkalinity for neutralizing acids; compare oils intended for the same use and service conditions.
