Why Diesel Fuel Gels in Cold Weather
As temperatures drop, wax that naturally occurs in diesel fuel begins to form crystals once the fuel passes its cloud point. As more wax bonds together:
- Wax crystals grow and start to plug the fuel filter
- Fuel flow is restricted and injection pressure drops
- The engine may lose power, stall, or refuse to start
At that point, regular anti-gel products are no longer enough. You need an emergency diesel recovery treatment designed to quickly break up wax crystals and restore fuel flow through the filter.
What AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Does
AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Fuel Treatment is engineered specifically as an emergency fuel treatment for gelled diesel fuel, not as a daily anti-gel.
Key benefits:
- Quickly dissolves gelled fuel to help restore flow through the fuel system
- Thaws frozen fuel filters, often avoiding an immediate filter replacement
- Performs well in ULSD, off-road diesel and biodiesel blends, so you can use one product across mixed fleets
- Alcohol-free and non-corrosive, helping protect sensitive components in modern high-pressure common-rail systems

How to Use Diesel Recovery in an Emergency
Always follow the instructions on the Diesel Recovery label and your equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. A typical cold-weather recovery process looks like this:
Park safely and shut down.
Bring the vehicle or equipment to a safe location away from traffic and ignition sources, then shut the engine off.Remove the fuel filter as directed by the OEM.
Have rags, a drain pan and the correct tools ready.Fill the fuel filter with Diesel Recovery.
Fill the replacement or existing filter with Diesel Recovery to the level recommended on the label.Reinstall the filter securely.
Make sure seals and O-rings are correctly seated and the filter is properly tightened.Dose the tank.
Pour the remaining Diesel Recovery into the fuel tank based on the treat rate on the bottle (up to about 30 gallons of fuel per 30 oz. bottle).Start and idle.
Start the engine and let it idle so treated fuel can circulate and dissolve wax crystals throughout the system.
Tip: For severe gelling, installing a new fuel filter after treating the fuel can restore full power more quickly.
Prevent the Next Gel-Up with AMSOIL Diesel 4-IN-1
Diesel Recovery is for emergencies. To help prevent gelling and keep your fuel system clean and protected every day, pair it with AMSOIL Diesel 4-IN-1 Fuel Additive as your primary cold-weather fuel treatment.
Diesel 4-IN-1 is designed to:
- Clean dirty injectors and help restore power and fuel economy
- Add lubricity for better wear protection in today’s “dry” ULSD fuels
- Improve cold flow and low-temperature startability
- Increase cetane for smoother idle and easier starts
- Treat up to 2.5 gallons of fuel per ounce, making it efficient for regular use
Used together:
- Diesel Recovery = emergency recovery when fuel is already gelled
- Diesel 4-IN-1 = ongoing all-season protection and cold-flow improvement

Diesel Recovery FAQ
What is diesel fuel recovery?
Diesel fuel recovery is the process of restoring fuel flow and engine operation after diesel fuel has already gelled or a fuel filter has frozen in cold weather. AMSOIL Diesel Recovery Fuel Treatment is formulated specifically for these situations: it disperses wax crystals in gelled fuel and helps thaw frozen filters so the engine can run again.
Is Diesel Recovery an anti-gel?
No. Diesel Recovery is not a preventative anti-gel. It is designed for use after fuel has started to gel or a filter has frozen. For prevention in cold weather, use an all-season additive like AMSOIL Diesel 4-IN-1 or a dedicated cold-flow additive before temperatures drop and before wax crystals form.
Will Diesel Recovery work in different diesel fuels?
Yes. Diesel Recovery is formulated to work in most common diesel fuels, including:
- Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)
- Dyed off-road diesel
- Biodiesel blends (such as B5, B10 or B20, as allowed by your OEM)
Always confirm fuel and additive compatibility with your owner’s manual and OEM recommendations.
Does Diesel Recovery contain alcohol?
No. Diesel Recovery is alcohol-free and non-corrosive, which helps protect high-pressure pumps, injectors and other sensitive components in modern diesel systems.
How much fuel does one bottle of Diesel Recovery treat?
A 30 oz. bottle of Diesel Recovery is designed to treat up to 30 gallons of fuel. Always follow the treat-rate instructions printed on the product label for your specific conditions.
When should I use Diesel Recovery vs. Diesel 4-IN-1?
- Use Diesel 4-IN-1 on a regular basis to clean injectors, increase lubricity, improve cold flow and boost cetane.
- Use Diesel Recovery only when the fuel has already gelled or the fuel filter has frozen and you need to get the vehicle or equipment running again.
